Electoral Commission registers 251,149 new voters in 6 days

251,149 people have been registered by the Electoral Commission (EC) as part of the current limited voter registration exercise across the country.

Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, Deputy Chair of the EC, is in charge of Corporate Services. At a news conference held in Accra yesterday, revealed that the EC had made some headway. In the six days of the exercise, the Ashanti Region recorded 44,232, or 17.6%, while the Greater Accra Region registered 33,899, or 13.5%.

Bono Region, 8,972, 3.6%; Bono East, 9,681, 3.9%; Volta, 12,190, representing 12.9%; North East Region, 6,928, 2.8%; Upper East, 10,646, 4.2%; Northern, 19,491, 7.8%; and Bono Region, 8,972, 3.6%.

The others are Ahafo, 6,273, representing 2.5%; Central, 27,984, representing 11.1%; Eastern, 25,625, representing 10.2%; and Upper West, 8,474, representing 3.4%.

Oti recorded 7,259, representing 2.9%; Savannah recorded 5,251, representing 2.1%; Western North recorded 9,134, representing 3.6%; and Western recorded 15,100, representing 6.0%.

According to him, the Commission has been registering 45,000 new voters per day on average. Of them, 135,898 are female, or 54.11% of the total, and 115, 251 are male, or 45.89%.

Speaking about the different types of identification, he stated that in contrast to the 2023 registration procedure, the guarantor system predominated.

Dr. Asare stated that although the Commission was pleased with the guarantor system’s growth, certain political parties and individuals were using it to make it easier for those who weren’t eligible to register, such children and foreigners.

In the registration process, he said, the Commission does not intend to favor any specific zones, constituencies, or regions.
