After three failed efforts, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the organizer of the Democracy Hub-organized anti-galamsey demonstration, was granted ¢20,000 bail on Wednesday, October 16.

Both the Circuit Court and the Accra High Court had rejected his prior bail requests.

During a protest against illicit mining, known locally as galamsey, which has seriously harmed Ghana’s ecology, Mr. Barker-Vormawor was taken into custody.

The demonstration, which sought to increase awareness and resistance to the practice, was attended by a number of activists who expressed worries about the destruction of natural resources.

Police reports state that Mr. Barker-Vormawor was arrested for participating in illegal acts during the demonstration, while the specifics of his alleged misbehavior are still being looked into.

He took the keys out of a police van that was parked at the protest location, which was one of the instances that resulted in his detention.

Notwithstanding these obstacles, the activist has not wavered in his opposition to galamsey and has persisted in calling for environmental changes and more responsibility in the battle against illicit mining.
