The speaker of Parliament must abide by the Supreme Court’s ruling, according to KT Hammond, the minister of trade and industry.
Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, shifted the balance of power in Parliament on Thursday, October 17, when he announced the vacancy of four parliamentary seats. Amenfi Central, Suhum, Agona West, and Fomena are the impacted constituencies.
However, the Supreme Court stayed the implementation of Bagbin’s decision to declare seats vacant on Friday, October 18. stating that the four MPs must be let to keep serving their constituents until the court issues a ruling.
The speaker’s order to declare the four parliamentary seats vacant was declared unlawful by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, November 12.
Speaking to the media following the decision, KT Hammond criticized Bagbin’s actions for disregarding previous court rulings and charged him with disregarding the constitution and the highest court.
“The Speaker of Parliament has acted with dictatorial tendencies. The Speaker is supposed to be the custodian of the Constitution, but he has decided that he’ll not respect the Constitution, and he would not respect the apex court of the land,” KT Hammond stated.
Mr. Hammond further point up that while Bagbin asserts to respecting the supremacy of the Constitution, he has ignored the supremacy of the Supreme Court.
“He respects the supremacy of the Constitution but does not respect the supremacy of the Supreme Court,” he said.
He also suggested that the speaker of Parliament accept the Supreme Court’s ruling.
“Bagbin has absolutely no choice than to comply with the ruling of the Supreme Court,” he added.
