Dela Edem, a member of John Mahama’s national campaign team, made disparaging remarks about former President John Agyekum Kufuor, which has put the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the center of controversy once more.

Edem made it clear during an interview with TV ZXY, an NDC affiliate station, that former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s current wheelchair confinement is a direct result of his “evil deeds” while in office.

“We all saw your bad governance, so don’t think we have forgotten. Your evil deeds have now kept you in the Wheelchair.”

Former President Kufuor’s support of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, after he described him as the most qualified individual to govern Ghana against NDC flagbearer John Mahama, prompted this outburst.

Disappointed, Dela Edem claimed on the show that Kufuor’s government was “bad” and that he had accumulated wealth by “hoarding Ghanaians’ money” after Ghana’s currency was changed.

The host of the show, Mugabe Maase, joined in ridiculing the former president after trying to stop him, which further aggravated the NDC member’s comments.

Noteworthy is the illustrious career of former President Kufuor, popularly referred to as the “Gentle Giant,” in Ghanaian politics.

He chaired the African Union from 2007 to 2008 and was president from 2001 to 2009.

John Kufuor established a number of initiatives during his administration with the goal of fostering socioeconomic development and stabilizing Ghana’s economy.

Kufuor has previously been the focus of the NDC.

Despite the former president’s contributions to Ghana’s progress, the party has a history of disparaging him.

On the other hand, after former First Lady Theresa Kufuor passed away, former President John Dramani Mahama led an NDC delegation to join Kufuor and his family in their grief.

The public and NPP members have fiercely denounced Edem’s comments and demanded that the elder statesman be treated with decency and respect.
