Ghanaians have been exhorted by the country’s formal president, John Agyekum Kufour, to choose a leader whose policies will impact everyone.
In an interview with GHOne TV, J. A. Kufour encouraged the young people whose parents had benefited from the free maternal care to cast their ballots for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which had instituted it.
“If the parents and teachers did not teach about Ghana’s political revolution, I will take this opportunity to say that this government is the reason your parent did not pay any hospital fees when they gave birth to you, so do not vote against them.” He noted
He also asked Ghanaians to choose a leader whose policies affect not just his political party but the entire country.
“If you are elected as a president, you are elected by all and not only your party. So, I will urge you to vote for a president whose policies will benefit everyone” He added.
The former president disclosed that the 1992 constitution, drafted by Jerry John Rawlings, included provisions for the free senior high school policy implemented by President Akuffo Addo.
“Do not forget that the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) was introduced during former President Jerry John Rawlings’ government as stipulated in the 1992 constitution as an educational mandate. But I will not take credit for myself or my party.”
In the course of his 2001–2009 policies, the former president registered 11 million people under the National Health Insurance Scheme, established a nationwide ambulance service, offered comprehensive health care for 6 million children, built 205 hospitals, and provided free medical care to women who were pregnant.
