The administration of President John Dramani Mahama has contributed one million cedis to aid those affected by the January 2, 2025, fire calamity that destroyed Accra’s Kantamanto Market.

The Kantamanto Traders Association, which is made up of 13 different groups, including the Used Clothes Traders Association, Egg Sellers Association, Hair Dressers Association, Platform Association, Railway No. 2 Sellers Association, Youth Clothe Sellers Association, Shoe Sellers Association, BMS, and others, paid President Mahama a courtesy call a week after he took office. This presentation comes after the president made a commitment to the group.

In his presentation, Mr. Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, spoke on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and said he was willing to help with plans to transform the market into a contemporary, multipurpose space that would benefit used clothing sellers and other vendors.

“There is hope. The President was elected to solve problems and he is ready to help devoid of politics” Mr Debrah noted.

According to the Chief of Staff, the government is particularly sorry for the significant losses during these trying times. To avoid another catastrophic disaster, he underlined that the merchants must be willing to discuss ideas for redesigning the enclave and allowing access for quick action with sufficient security.

In the presence of the leadership of more than thirteen groups, the Kantamanto Traders Association Chairman, Rev. Opoku Afreh, thanked the President for the assistance.

According to him, the Kantamanto was completely destroyed, including millions of cedis from sales that had not yet been deposited to the banks.

He underlined that “bales of clothes worth $1.7 million were completely destroyed and one wholesale, which has never been torched.”

According to Rev. Opoku, they have reached an agreement with ACCESS Bank, which is prepared to provide a $100 million loan in order to construct a modern market.

To resolve a disagreement over the impacted land, he did, however, advocate for government assistance.

The President’s Legal Advisor, Marietta Brew Oppong, a few Presidential Staffers, and the two Deputy Chiefs of Staff, Stanislav Dogbe and Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, were in attendance.

More than seven thousand stores were damaged in the Kantamanto Market fire tragedy on January 7.
