Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko was named the National Communications Authority’s (NCA) Acting Director General by President John Dramani Mahama. This is the first time the role has been filled from inside the organization.

The announcement, posted on the organization’s Facebook page on January 24, 2025, showcases Rev. Ing. Fianko’s outstanding two-decade career in ICT innovation, broadcasting regulation, telecommunications, and radio frequency spectrum management.

Rev. Ing. Fianko began his career at the NCA in 2004 as a National Service Person and worked his way up to become Director of the Engineering Division in January 2024.

As Chair of the Significant Market Power Operations Team, he oversaw Ghana’s radio frequency spectrum, encouraged fair competition, and was instrumental in the country’s switch from analog to digital broadcasting.

As a result of his work, DTT receiver requirements were created and subsequently incorporated into ECOWAS standards. Through his efforts to groups like the African Telecommunication Union (ATU), ECOWAS, and the Regional African Satellite Communication Organization (RASCOM), he has had a major impact on telecommunications policy on a global scale.

His international prominence was demonstrated in 2022 when he was chosen to the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) famous Radio Regulations Board (RRB) for a four-year term (2023–2026).

Rev. Ing. Fianko is a graduate of Universidad Católica de Murcia with degrees in Applied Business Leadership, Communications Management, and Electrical/Electronic Engineering from KNUST and Buckinghamshire New University, respectively.

He is a published author, a Methodist Church Ghana minister, and the creator of the evangelistic outreach organization Nkwa.Life in addition to his technological expertise.

Rev. Ing. Fianko, who takes over as Acting Director General from Dr. Joe Anokye, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to set up Ghana’s communications sector for expansion and innovation.
