Over 12,000 people in eight towns along the Volta River were displaced and suffered losses as a result of the Akosombo Dam spill in September 2023, and President John Dramani Mahama has promised to provide compensation.

Widespread damage resulted from the dam spill, which severely damaged livelihoods in the Lower Volta Basin and submerged homes, schools, and farmlands.

President Mahama reassured Ghanaians on January 24, 2025, during his “Thank You” tour in the Volta Region, that his administration is dedicated to providing just compensation and averting similar incidents in the future.

“We will make sure that the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage receive fair compensation, and we will take concrete steps to prevent such disasters in the future,” he stated.

Along with the promise of compensation, President Mahama has instructed the Transport Minister to brief the Cabinet on the progress of the Keta Port project, a significant undertaking that is anticipated to stimulate regional economic activity.

In the meantime, GH₵220 million was set aside in the 2024 national budget to aid in the relief effort for communities in the Oti, Savannah, and Bono-East areas who were impacted by the Akosombo spill and flooding.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has also threatened to file a lawsuit to force the government to pay compensation to all impacted parties.
