Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has given the Member of Parliament (MP) who made the contentious remark about as the “daughter of a murderer” an ultimatum.
He has given them a week to come forward willingly or risk dire repercussions.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, March 4, Mr. Bagbin characterized the remark as careless and extremely upsetting, stressing that such statements compromise the House’s decorum and dignity.
He threatened to take strong measures if the ultimatum was not followed and declared that an official investigation would be launched to find the MP who made the comments.
The Majority Leader has supported the Speaker’s demand that the MP accept responsibility for their actions.
The Majority Leader issued a warning, saying that if the MP doesn’t come forward, the House will back the application of the harshest penalties when the person is identified by the investigation.
Many people are demanding accountability and more stringent enforcement of parliamentary conduct in response to the contentious remark, which has caused considerable indignation.
Mr. Bagbin reaffirmed his dedication to maintaining Parliament’s integrity.
A disparaging statement made about Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the member of parliament for Klottey Korle and the daughter of the late former president Jerry John Rawlings, is at the heart of the controversy surrounding the “daughter of a murderer” speech in Parliament.
On February 4, during contentious debates marking the 60th anniversary of Joseph Boakye Danquah’s passing, the incident took place during a legislative session.
“Daughter of a murderer, sit down!” yelled an anonymous male voice from the parliamentary backbench as Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin was speaking to the House.
The remark implied that Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings’ father was accountable for previous political murders, a charge that has been contested throughout history.
Members expressed amazement and disapproval, and the outburst immediately caused mayhem in the chamber.
