The old Headquarters lacked structural integrity – Bank of Ghana Governor

A new facility had to be built since the existing central bank headquarters lacked structural integrity, according to Dr. Johnson Asiama, governor of the Bank of Ghana.

In response to inquiries about the Bank of Ghana’s intention to construct a new headquarters, he made this clear when he stood before Parliament.

Dr. Asiama clarified that the board’s consideration of purchasing land for the project in 2011 marked the beginning of the talks about a new headquarters.

Nevertheless, in spite of discussions, the board failed to agree on a particular site prior to the conclusion of its term.

“Mr Speaker, even in 2016, when I was the Deputy Governor, the same issue was being considered; however, we could not settle on a specific location,” he said.

He added that the current headquarters, which was constructed in the late 1950s, had a structural integrity audit in 2019 under a new board.

The audit’s conclusions showed that the structure was no longer suitable for its intended use due to serious flaws that had grown over time.

“The existing headquarters had developed significant structural defects and was no longer fit for purpose,” he said.

Concerns regarding the necessity and expense of building a new headquarters have been expressed in response to Dr. Asiama’s remarks.

But he insisted that the choice was founded on professional evaluations, emphasizing how crucial a contemporary, physically sound facility is to the central bank’s efficient operation.
