Three people have been killed and numerous others, including firefighters, injured in a massive explosion at a mining explosives shop in Odumase, close to Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality.

A sensitive lighting during the evening rains in one of the stores that sold dynamites and other explosives used by nearby miners set off the Wednesday night explosion.

Nearby buildings were torn apart by the strong explosion, which resulted in significant damage and numerous injuries.

Authorities have confirmed the death of a resident who was attempting to alert firemen to the impending danger at the scene, while two other residents passed away in the hospital, according to eyewitnesses.

Divisional Officer, Grade 2 Joe Bryden, the Asante Akyem Central Municipal Fire Commander, described the sad event as follows: “He was attempting to warn the firefighters to back off, but the explosion happened before he could escape.” He was seriously hurt, and I’ve been informed that he’s passed away.

Some victims reportedly suffered mutilated body parts, while firefighters sent to put out the fire were also hurt. The explosion, which occurred only a few meters from a gas station, increased local safety concerns.

As the investigation goes on, authorities are still determining the complete number of casualties and damage.

On Wednesday, March 5, 2025, a devastating mining dynamite explosion at a container shop in Konongo-Odumasi, Ashanti Region, destroyed at least 30 houses.

Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, revealed this on the evening of Thursday, March 6, 2025, when he visited the site of the explosion.

“I received the unfortunate news through the Ashanti North Regional Police Commander that someone was selling mining explosive materials such as dynamite. Now, I’m told 30 houses were affected. I have directed NADMO to conduct their assessment so we can identify the affected people and release some mattresses, among other items, to support them immediately. For houses that need re-roofing, the government will provide support,” he disclosed it in an interview with the media.

Additionally, Dr. Frank Amoakohene gave 5,000 Ghana cedis (GH₵5,000) to each fire-affected house on behalf of the government.

“This exercise to distribute the money to the affected houses will be led by Nananom in coordination with the Konongo District coordinating director,” he said.

In order to prevent other tragedies, the minister also reassured the community that a team of detectives had been assigned to carry out a comprehensive examination to make sure there were no hidden mining explosives in any local homes or businesses.
