The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was invited by Buckingham Palace to attend the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II in England, but the King has other equally important responsibilities, according to the Manhyia Palace in the Ashanti Region.

Today, Monday, September 19, 2022, is the late Queen of England’s funeral and burial.

There are kings, queens, and ambassadors from all around the world in attendance.

People waited for hours to see her casket at Westminster Hall in the center of London where she had been lying in state for days.

Despite receiving an official invitation, the Asantehene was unable to attend the burial, according to the Manhyia Palace, who further explained that the invitation arrived while the King was away on official business.

On Monday, September 19, 2022, Osei Bonsu Safo Katanka, the historian at Manhyia Palace, explained that the invitation letter failed to make arrangements for a representative to represent the Asante King at the funeral; as a result, no representative was sent either to represent the King. He was speaking in an interview with Mr. Emmanuel Quarshie (The Hitman), host of the Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra 100.5 FM monitored by Ghanatodayonline.com.

The Asante Kingdom, he claimed, has a good history with the British king notwithstanding Asanteman’s absence from the funeral.

He said that an Asante King hosted the Queen in Kumasi in 1961 on her visit to Ghana.

The queen described the Asante Kingdom as the gold city of West Africa and Asante as the gold city of the Gold Coast for this reason, he claimed.

He said, “She called Kumasi the Garden City of West Africa.”
