The three teacher unions have been told by the National Labour Commission (NLC) to immediately end their strike and resume talks with the government.
Due to the Teacher Unions’ unwillingness to end their strike, the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations brought the standoff between them and the striking unions to the NLC.
On Friday, November 4, the Teacher Unions announced a sit-down strike in opposition to Dr. Eric Nkansah’s selection as Director-General of the Ghana Education Service.
The unions demanded Dr. Nkansah be fired because they claimed he was a financier rather than a qualified teacher.
The National Association of Graduate Teachers(NAGRAT), the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana(CCT), and the Ghana National Association of Teachers(GNAT) are the unions.
Academic work at pre-tertiary institutions has been affected by the strike.
After the meeting, Dr. Bright Wereko Brobby, the deputy employment minister, told the media that the unions had been asked to return to work and properly engage the government in order to resolve their concerns because they had not followed the required procedures before calling the strike.
The teacher unions urged the government to reverse its decision as they conveyed their displeasure and refusal to cooperate with the new GES D-G.
