Prior to the National Delegates Congress of the NDC, slated for December 17, 2022 in Accra, former president John Mahama has warned candidates from using his name in connection with their campaigns.

The Special Aide to the former President, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, stated in a statement dated December 13, 2022, Mr. Mahama is requesting candidates and their campaigners to avoid from purposeful usage of name with their campaign.

“As has been publicly stated by Mr. Mahama, he has no preference and has not endorsed any candidate in the ongoing NDC national executive elections, which climaxes on Saturday at the 10th National Delegates Congress.

“Mr. Mahama has noted the attempt by some candidates to push a narrative, despite his previous cautions, that he supports their candidature,” madam Mogtari stated.

“Of paramount interest to President Mahama is Victory for the NDC in 2024 to work with expectant and suffering Ghanaians to “Build the Ghana We Want.” He, like other supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will work with whoever the delegates choose and elect” the statement added.

The Office of Mr. Mahama has also denounced a report in a tabloid newspaper that claimed the former president’s family was backing one of the NDC candidates for national chairman.

The statement went on to say, “The said allegation and the publication are false, and the rank and file of the party are encouraged to disregard them.”

However, certain unsettling incidents tarnished the recently concluded youth and women’s congress, which was held at Cape Coast in the Central Region on December 10, 2022.

Sixteen people are sought for by the Ghana Police Service in connection with the violent disturbances.

Three people were hurt and property was damaged after a violent battle between two competing factions at the Congress that broke up proceedings. The conflict involved the use of chairs, clubs, blocks, sticks, and other projectiles.

However, the situation was stabilized thanks to the police’s intervention, allowing the proceedings to go on uninterrupted to the very conclusion.
