According to his comments, the Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister-designate Stephen Asamoah Boateng popularly known as Asabee is against same-sex unions.

When he came before the Parliament’s Appointments Committee, he made his position on the contentious topic clear.

Gizella Tetteh, a committee member, asked him the question to find out the nominee’s position on the issue.

The Minister-designate responded by saying: “Same-sex legalising in Ghana, I am opposed to it.”
He further stated that he would ensure that “our traditional authorities are lifted higher to the dignified and noble status.”

“Our Christian and Muslim leadership must be given the necessary support so they can get the congregation to understand that we are one nation which is a sovereign state … so my role is to make sure that we all work together on this aspect and not bring trouble. In the case of conflict, we will manage it and jaw,” Asabee stated.

A measure to criminalize the actions of the LGBTQ+ community in the nation is now being debated in Parliament.

The proposed measure would criminalize support for LGBT rights, mandate reporting of “suspects,” support conversion treatment, and impose lengthier prison terms.

Eight parliamentarians, largely from the opposition party, wrote a measure titled “Promotion of proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values” that has been roundly denounced by the international world and human rights advocates.
