Charles Opoku, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) chosen candidate for the Central Region’s Assin North by-election, has urged party members to put aside their differences and work together to secure the seat for the party.
He said his victory should serve as a launch pad for the party to bridge the divisions within the rank and file.
He called on all factions within the party to unite for the battle ahead.
Mr Charles Opoku polled 397 votes as against his closest rival in the race, Fredrick Freeman Amoah-Kyei, who polled 136 votes and 3 votes were rejected out of the total 536 votes cast by the electorates.
Big guns from the party hierarchy were also present at the centre to monitor proceedings.
Notable among them were the General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua; National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye.
As a result, James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress and Charles Opoku will engage in combat.
In the 2020 parliamentary election, Quayson defeated Abena Durowaa of the NPP to win the Assin North seat.
But because he had Canadian citizenship at the time of his filing to run in the 2020 election, the Supreme Court interpreted the 1992 Constitution to say that he was ineligible.
Quayson stated that he had applied to renounce his Canadian citizenship at the time he filed to contest and was awaiting his certificate of renunciation, according to a lawsuit in the High Court in Cape Coast and the subsequent Supreme Court case.
