Following a lengthy debate in the House on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, Parliament confirmed Gertrude Torkornoo’s nomination for Chief Justice.
Justice Torkornoo was proposed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in April 2023.
Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, who left the seat on May 24, is being replaced by her.
She stated, among other things, that it is incorrect to believe that judges in Ghana follow the orders of those who nominate them during her interview on Friday, May 26.
She made it clear that judges serve the interests of all Ghanaians, not just those who nominate them.
She responded when asked by Madina Lawmaker Francis Xavier Sosu about the idea that judges, particularly the Justices of the Supreme Court, follow the orders of those who appoint them “it is a wrong perception because the load of our work is in respect of the ordinary Ghanaian, it hardly has anything to do with appointing authorities.”
She went on to say that she will use “consistent engagement with the Ghanaian community through the media regarding how the adjudication of justice” is carried out in order to dispel such a view.
