Five people have been taken into custody by Ashanti Region police in relation to an alleged attack on fire officers, one of whom suffered injuries.
On Monday, March 11, 2024, the incident happened as the officers were responding to a fire outbreak at the Racecourse Market.
The suspects said that the fire fighters’ slow response to the incident encouraged them to throw stones at them.
A portion of the Racecourse Market, dwelling to food and ingredient traders as well as Millers, was completely destroyed by the fire, which broke out on Monday at around one in the morning.
There was severe damage, affecting about 180 shops.
D.O. 3 Simon Ben Boadu, the Fire Commander of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Fire Station, attributed the fire’s quick spread to the attacks on the fire crew.
“We have counted about 180 shops after preliminary investigations showed that the fire originated from one of the corn mills and spread to other shops due to their close proximity.
“An investigation is still in progress. We’re going to follow this through to the end. “Whatever happens to them [the arrested suspects], it will serve as a warning to others to cease attacking firefighters,” Mr Boadu stated.
