The Ashanti Regional health director Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang has expressed worry on increasing numbers of maternal mortality rate in the region.
According to Dr Tenkorang, the directorate recorded 174 maternal death in the region last year which eleven out of the figure were through unsafe abortion.
Addressing the media at the launch of campaign on zero tolerance for maternal mortality in the region, he stated that the maternal death especially which is through abortion is avoidable but most pregnant women rely on quack doctors which has attributed to the surge in numbers of the menace.
Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang indicated that the Ashanti Regional directorate will soon start public sensitisation to ensure no case of mortality will be recorded.
He said they will be visiting schools to educate the adolescent and the youth particular on abortion law and consequences of unsafe abortion to eradicate the threat.
“In Ghana, we want to strengthen safe abortion services and then do away with unsafe abortions. We need to work together to empower them to know what to do in an event of unwanted pregnancy. The campaign will educate and empower them on what to do in the case of an unwanted pregnancy.”
Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang therefore advised parents to desist from stigmatization whenever they see premature pregnancy among their adolescent.
