The government of Ghana has announced a major change in strategy to tackle illicit mining, according to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

After a walk in Kwahu, Dr. Bawumia spoke to ecstatic New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters, promising the miners that the next NPP government would not fire excavators but would instead put policies in place to assist legal mining activities.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted the planned changes and revealed the creation of the Minerals Development Bank, which would finance the mining industry with the goal of encouraging ethical and sustainable mining operations and reducing harassment experienced by miners.

Dr. Bawumia poked fun at NDC leader John Mahama’s effort at a political comeback by asserting the NPP’s better performance in terms of economic development indicators as compared to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In contrast to the NPP’s effective government, he compared Mahama to a candidate who failed tests.

In contrast to him, who would run for office after four years, Bawumia claimed that John Mahama will not put in as much effort since he only has four years, including the honeymoon time.

Together with Dr. Bawumia, National Chairman Stephen Ntim and General Secretary Justin Kodua spoke to the supporters, offering words of encouragement and party unity.

There were a few ministers and other government representatives present.
