The nation’s three teacher unions are now on an indefinite strike that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has called “a show of bad faith.”

This follows the decision to go on an indefinite strike by the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) “without serving the required notice to embark on a strike contrary to the relevant provisions of the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651) and the Rules of Engagement signed with the Unions,” the FWSC declares.

Due to their concerns over the ongoing delay in negotiating their conditions of service, the teacher unions have decided to go on an indefinite strike that begins on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

However, the FWSC made it clear in a statement that “there has not been any delay in the negotiations” in response to the three teacher unions’ action.

The Government Team and the Teacher Unions were able to agree on “10 out of the 16 items submitted for negotiation,” according to the FWSC, during a meeting with the unions on January 20, 2024.

“FWSC indicated that there was the need to secure further mandate from the Ministry of Finance on the outstanding items in order to conclude negotiations with the Teacher Unions, to which they agreed.”

It was disclosed that it then invited the Teacher Unions to a meeting on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 10 a.m., with the aim of advancing and maybe concluding the discussions. The meeting was held on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.

According to the statement, the FWSC tried contacting a few Teacher Union officials further, but they gave no “indication, whatsoever, of their intention not to be available for further engagement.”

Consequently, the FWSC made a plea to the union leadership to “call off the strike immediately and come back to the negotiating table to continue with the engagement in good faith.”
