Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson, who is now on trial for perjury and forgery, has stated his unwavering faith in Ghana’s criminal justice system.

When asked if he was worried about going to jail if found guilty, the troubled congressman responded, “No, why should I? I have faith in the legal system.

“The fundamental thing about any judicial matter is that person intended to commit that crime. Did he plan it, I have not planned anything of such,” he added.

“My strongest conviction is that this is just a matter of time,” Hon Quayson disclosed it in an interview with Citi FM.

“When you believe you have done the right thing, you shouldn’t be afraid. I trust the court will deliver a very positive verdict. I trust my lawyers, I trust the conscience of the people.”

The MP revealed that since 2009, he had been using his dual citizenship. He described how to apply for dual citizenship through the Ministry of Interior, including how to get a green certificate by presenting both a Canadian and a Ghanaian passport.

Due to his dual citizenship, Quayson was able to travel between Ghana and Canada without a visa. He emphasized that the Ghanaian government had recognized his dual citizenship, casting doubt on the claims made concerning his nationality.

“So, I don’t fear going to jail at all,” the Assin North MP stated.

In connection with a number of alleged offenses in the run-up to the 2020 Assin North parliamentary election, Quayson is accused of forgery and perjury.

He has entered a not guilty plea to five counts of forging a passport or travel document, making a false statutory declaration intentionally, lying under oath, and making a false declaration for office.

The prosecution’s case is that when Quayson sought for a Ghanaian passport, he falsely claimed to the passport office that he didn’t have a passport for another nation.

Additionally, Quayson is accused by the prosecution of lying to the Electoral Commission (EC) when he declared his candidacy for the Assin North seat, claiming that he had no allegiance to any other nation.
