John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer and former president, has declared himself the “holder of the 8” in a daring move in reaction to the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) continuous push to “break the 8.”

In the upcoming 2024 elections, the NPP is putting up a fight to become the first political party in Ghana to win three terms in a row since the Fourth Republic.

During his campaign visit, Mahama spoke to artisans at the Kokompe Spare Parts Line in the Ablekuma North Constituency. With confidence, he said that he will defeat the NPP and achieve their aim of breaking the eight. “I hold the eight, so they are afraid to break it,” he said, casting himself as a metaphorical roadblock to the NPP’s goals.

“If they say they want to break the 8, let them try and do so for me to see, because I am now the holder of the number 8,” the NDC flag bearer went on to challenge his political rivals.

With the NPP aiming to win a historic third term in office and the NDC seeking to win back the president after losing in 2016 and 2020, the political momentum around the impending elections in 2024 is being bolstered by this rhetoric.

Mahama assured the craftsmen of significant policy reforms under a future NDC government, citing concrete benefits for local enterprises beyond the symbolism of the “number 8.” His promise was to establish a fixed-rate system at Ghana’s ports in order to make the process of importing products more transparent and effective. Assuring a more stable and equitable system, Mahama said that this strategy will lessen the difficulties encountered by local businesses, especially those that depend on imports.

Mahama’s remarks, which come as the campaign picks up steam, indicate a clear threat to the NPP’s electoral plan, putting the “breaking the 8” slogan center stage in the political scene of 2024.
