The National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) resistance to the Ameri Power Plant’s renaming has prompted a response from Nana Akomea.

On Wednesday, April 17, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will officially open the power plant in an effort to alleviate the energy crisis.

The facility will enhance the power supply to Kumasi and the surrounding areas.

The NDC has objected to the government’s renaming of the plant, which is located in Kumasi, as “Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant.”

The NDC believes that the name change is an attempt to tarnish John Dramani Mahama, their former president, who oversaw the agreement to acquire the Ameri facility.

However, Nana Akomea, the chief executive of STC, has called these disagreements “childish talk.”

It’s childish absurd to say that naming it Kumasi indicates we (Ghanaians) don’t want to know that it’s John Mahama’s factory. He answered, “They ought to quit uttering things like these.

He went on to say that the Ameri Power Plant’s name change is just being done to “identify the one in Kumasi.”

However, Nana Akomea stated that a regulation needs to be formed in order to prevent future disputes over project names by either the NDC or the NPP and to prevent arguments similar to those made by the NDC.

“In general, consultation and consensus-building should be employed to the greatest extent possible when naming national institutions. Speaking on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” broadcast, he emphasized that when it is by consent, Parliament can enact an Act to establish the name in order to prevent any controversies.
