A group of skilled cattle catchers has been assembled by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly in order to gather straggling cows in the city.
This approach is a part of the efforts to prevent ruminants from trampling on several million recently planted Green Ghana trees.
Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah informed reporters during a news conference to announce the intervention, saying, “You know, it is not easy to catch a cow.” It is quite challenging. Thus, some of those with skill will be hired to complete the task for us.
“We are going to engage them, we will pay them, and it will be their responsibility to ensure that the trees that we planted will not be consumed by or destroyed by the cattle”, he explained.
Mr Osei-Mensah added: “We will pay them during the period; that is for a whole year, and if it is possible to have adequate resources to sustain it, then we sustain them the following year, too.”
Simon Osei Mensah stated that the rearing or keeping of cattle on any premises or in any part of the metropolis otherwise than for immediate slaughter or in such public place or as the KMA may provide for that purpose is forbidden and any cattle kept in contravention of these bylaws may be seized by any person authorized by the KMA and placed in an area as stipulated in the KMA bylaws.
