Following reports of violence and disorder in various regions of the country, President-elect John Dramani Mahama made a nationwide appeal for calm and tolerance.
Mahama asked residents to maintain composure and refrain from acts that could jeopardize Ghana’s institutions and democracy during a live broadcast on Tuesday night, December 10, in which he denounced reports of attacks on public offices and facilities.
“Transitions from one administration to another create the impression of a vacuum power and certain people act in their own parochial interest instead of the national interest,” Mahama stated.
He restated his appeal for young people to direct their resentment and fury toward constructive endeavors to rebuild the country rather than criminal activity.
“I urge the youth not to vent their frustrations in criminal enterprise. Instead, they must channel their anger and frustration into the positive enterprise of resetting and rebuilding our beloved nation,” he said.
In order to stop the continuous acts of lawlessness, the president-elect also urged the current administration and security services to act immediately.
“I call on the President and security agencies to act decisively to curb the ongoing acts of lawlessness immediately because state power is still in the hands of the present administration,” Mahama stated.
Following his historic reelection victory in the 2024 presidential election, Mahama gave this speech.
He has promised to rebuild public confidence in the government and strive for a Ghana that benefits all, not just a select few.
