John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been formally announced as the 2024 general election president-elect by Jean Mensa, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).
The former president, Mr. Mahama, won by a wide margin in the nationwide elections that were held on Saturday, December 7.
Jean Mensa, the EC chairwoman and returning officer, reports that Mr. John Mahama received 6,328,397 votes, or 56.55% of the vote, while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.
There are 11,191,422 legitimate votes overall, while 239,109 ballots were rejected. 11,430,531 votes were cast in total.
With 267 constituencies, the voter turnout percentage is 60.9%.
In line with the Constitution, Ghanaians cast ballots over the weekend to choose a new President of the Republic and new Members of Parliament (MPs).
The NDC has gained enough seats to secure a definite majority in parliament, despite the fact that several seats are still up for dispute.
Due to problems with attempted rigging and delays in the compilation of results in several constituencies, the exercise, which had begun calmly on Saturday morning, later descended into pandemonium in various regions of the nation.
Three people have been killed and numerous others injured in the violence that followed the election. To date, 89 persons have been taken into custody by the Ghana Police Service for a variety of election-related offenses.
