A statewide strike by Ghanaian mortuary workers over unsatisfactory working conditions and outstanding concerns is scheduled to begin on Thursday, September 26, 2024.
Given the government’s willful disregard for their requests, the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has given notice.
MOWAG General Secretary Richard Kofi Jordan emphasized in a statement dated Tuesday, September 17, that the strike is a final choice following many attempts to settle the concerns.
Inadequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) provision exposes workers to risks and infections, according to workers’ concerns.
Furthermore, the request for budgetary approval to hire 500 more mortuary workers has been disregarded, and wage arrears that date back to 2020 are still attributed.
In addition, MOWAG is requesting payment of the COVID-19 incentive that the President declared but that mortuary employees have not yet received.
The statement underlined the critical need to address these problems by pointing out the startling number of mortuary worker deaths—16 have been documented in only one year.
Members are asked to stay at home as all mortuaries will be closed until their demands are fulfilled.
