MTN Corporate Communications Team marks International Women’s Day with women in PR Ghana

In honor of International Women’s Day this year, the Corporate Communications Team of MTN Ghana welcomed PR professionals from Women in PR Ghana.

The gathering, with the theme “Digital: Embracing Innovation and Technology as PR Women,” saw MTN’s Corporate Communications Team meet with over 40 young professionals from Women in PR Ghana, a professional networking group dedicated to empowering female PR professionals and students.

Gina Asare Fiagbenu, Senior Manager, Corporate Communications; Efua Falconer, Manager, Corporate Communications; Afua Serwaa Asafo-Adjei, Communication Advisor-Media Relations; Olivia Mifetu, Internal Communications; and Sophia Tandoh, Regulatory Advisor at MTN Ghana, were among the panelists in the discussion, which was moderated by Lorrencia Adam Nkrumah, Communications Coordinator at Barry Callebaut.

Gina Asare Fiagbenu spoke about the importance of International Women’s Day and the hosting of the PR professionals. She said it was crucial for seasoned PR professionals to mentor, nurture, and empower the following generation of female professionals to take the reins of leadership in Ghana’s Public Relations industry.

She said, “Over the years, the Public Relations industry has seen remarkable growth and advancement and as the profession continues to evolve and the younger generation explores careers in Public Relations and Communications, we need to give it a further push by mentoring and nurturing them. With the advent of innovation and technology, the profession has become more exciting and interesting, and opened up new frontiers. Technology continues to help us do better and work more effectively and efficiently as PR professionals.” She admonished the younger generation to leverage the growing opportunities within the digital world to learn and prepare themselves for the world of work.

Young PR professionals in attendance get the chance to learn from seasoned professionals who have established a benchmark for the PR industry, according to Faith Senam Ocloo, founder of Women in PR Ghana.

“We are grateful to MTN for opening their doors to us,” she said, adding that it is important to learn from the finest.She encouraged upcoming professionals to be ready to learn and serve.

The crucial role that MTN’s corporate communications team plays, managing work-life balance, developing a career in public relations, resolving conflicts, issues management, embracing and utilizing technology and innovation in PR, leadership, crisis management, and media relations were all topics of discussion.

The team also acknowledged the importance MTN places on PR and the substantial sacrifices MTN has made to funding and backing their efforts.

The MTN panel pointed out that the overarching theme of the 2023 International Women’s Day is completely consistent with MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategy of providing leading digital solutions for Africa’s progress and how they are utilizing the power of innovation, technology, cutting-edge PR trends, and digital touchpoints to improve reputation management and engage with customers in the current digital world.
