The late Dr. John Kumah’s widow has firmly stated that her husband fought a serious illness for more than a year and did not pass away from food poisoning, as has been circulating in some sections of mainstream and social media.
Dr. Kumah was the Deputy Finance Minister and a Member of Parliament(MP) for the Ashanti Region for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In an exclusive interview with Wilberforce Asare of Asaase News at her marital home in Chantan, an Accra suburb, Apostle Lilian Kumah revealed that her late husband did not die from food poisoning on Thursday, March 7, 2024, but rather from a terminal illness that he had been fighting for almost a year since his doctors in Germany discovered it.
Apostle Mrs. Lilian Kumah, who is also the General Overseer of Disciples of Christ Ministries, asked everyone who was conjecturing about her husband’s cause of death to stop immediately, as it is adding to the suffering of both his immediate family and the larger Kumah family. Her voice was grave and sorrowful.
She also demanded immediate police action against well-known individuals like Blessed Godsbrain Smart, also referred to as Captain Smart, who has openly claimed that her late husband was poisoned but has not been forced to produce any proof to back up his outrageous allegation regarding John Kumah’s demise.
“Why is it that someone (referring to Captain Smart) has been this bold to claim that he knows for a fact that a person like John Kumah who has serviced his country virtually all his life, was poisoned, while he was working for his country and party (New Patriotic Party, NPP), why should we sit down and not bring that person to book.
“If it is true that a person who is not dead but alive claims that he knows how my husband (John Kumah) died and that he was poisoned, and that person is still moving around for the past three weeks, it hurts me, it saddens me and I do not know how best to express my frustrations about these false claims by Captain Smart,” the widow of John Kumah, Apostle Lilian Kumah said.
“If there are laws in this country concerning such false claims, I think this is the time for the leadership of the land to bring that wicked person (Captain Smart) to book to prove his false claims and to point out the persons who were involved in the poisoning of my late husband,” Mrs. Kumah said.
Speaking about the true reason for her husband’s passing, Apostle Lilian Kumah said that sometime in August 2023, when visiting her husband for a check-up, John Kumah was diagnosed with a blood-related illness in Germany.
Mrs. Kumah continued, saying that during her husband’s medical examinations in Ghana and Germany, none of the physicians they saw ever brought up the subject of poisoning in her late husband’s blood vessels.
“My husband went through pain but he never showed that he was in pain. He went through all the pain to do everything he needed to do during the period of his ill-health.
“He was motivated by a particular motto that he always operated by which is, “We don’t do what is convenient, we do what we are commanded to do”. So [despite] all the pain, he endured,” Mrs. Kumah remarked.
“Right from day one since he was diagnosed in Germany, I have been part of the medical processes my husband went through, and no one, none of the doctors ever told me that my husband’s medical situation was because of poisoning.
“I have all the medical reports both from Germany and Ghana and food poisoning has never been mentioned in any of the reports,” the widow of the late John Kumah added.
Dr. John Kumah passed away at the Suhum government hospital at around 12:40 PM. He was traveling from Ejisu to Accra with his wife and a medical professional when the doctor on board realized that Mr. Kumah’s condition was rapidly declining. As a result, the ambulance carrying them was redirected to the Suhum medical facility.
When he arrived at the hospital on Thursday, March 7, 2024, a little after 11:00 am, the medical staff worked quickly to attempt to stabilize him so he could go to Accra and then on to Germany, where he has been receiving treatment for his health issue. Nevertheless, the Suhum government hospital was unable to sustain his life.
