The IGP allegedly arranged the recording of the leaked audio and has the original copy, according to COP George Mensah, one of the top police officers at the center of the alleged plot to remove the current Inspector of Police, George Akuffo Dampare.

On Friday, September 1, 2023, COP Mensah presented himself before the special parliamentary committee looking into the matter.

The tape that is currently being discussed in parliament, according to Mr. Mensah, Director General, Technical at the Ghana Police Service, has been extensively altered.

COP Mensah advised Dr. Dampare to provide them with the audio as he has the original copy when the committee members sought to know where the purported original copy of the audio is.

“My intel suggests that what was used to tape the conversation was done by the current IGP. He sent some people to do it and after which he went for it and so the tape, from my intel is with the IGP, and he caused it to be leaked and so if this committee wants the tape, then it should contact the IGP for it” COP Mensah said.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, created the Committee in response to the leaked audio, which purportedly features a Police Commissioner and a politician discussing the conspiracy. Representatives from both the majority and minority parties in parliament, as well as technical experts, make up the seven-member committee.

The hidden recording’s implications for the alleged scheme to depose IGP Dampare are to be looked at by the Committee. By September 10, 2023, its conclusions are expected to be delivered.

COP Mensah responded in the positive when asked about a claim made on the recording that the current IGP was in frequent contact with the former president John Dramani Mahama and informed the committee that his response was likewise based on his information.

The authenticity of the audio under investigation by the seven-member Parliamentary committee has been disputed by one of the three police officials who are believed to have participated in a conversation that discussed a scheme to depose the Inspector General of Police.

Although he could recognize a voice that sounded similar to his own, Ghana Police Service Director-General and Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah stated he was confident the audio had been altered.

He made the claim yesterday when he went before the committee to respond to inquiries regarding the accuracy or otherwise of the recording that had leaked.

“This is an edited tape; there are so many things in that tape that I heard today that I do not remember, and there are certain things I remember that we discussed that are not on the tape,” COP Mensah said.
