Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as “Napo,” is the vice presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party. He has sharply criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for allegedly being unable to run Ghana’s education system.
Speaking on Friday, October 4, to a group of chiefs and imams in Afrancho, in the Afigya Kwabre South Constituency, the former minister of education bemoaned the NDC’s eight years in office for not implementing the essential changes to the educational system.
“The E-Block was the NDC flagship policy at the time, but despite the noise that they made about the E-Block, they shockingly failed woefully to deliver on their promises. After eight years in political office, the NDC only delivered a paltry 28 E-Blocks, but they used propaganda, as usual, to bloat the figure”.
“Under the NPP government, academic work and infrastructure in the various schools have improved significantly due to good governance,” he observed.
Speaking about the NPP’s accomplishments in the field of education, he mentioned that the party had enacted the well-known free Senior High School (SHS) policy, which had increased student enrollment.
He claims that students from low-income families who otherwise may have dropped out of school are now enrolled and working toward their academic objectives because to the free SHS program.
In addition, Napo stated that 3,001 Legacy and New Projects had been successfully completed by the government since 2017 through GETFund.
After providing a summary, he stated that the 1,827 Legacy projects were separated into 1,007 projects in basic schools, 662 in senior high schools (SHS), 16 E-Blocks, and 142 in the tertiary sector.
Napo said that there are 1,174 new projects in total, comprising 2 TVET Centers, 2 model schools, 605 SHS, 11 tertiary, and 554 basic schools.
He stated that nine model schools—including the first-ever Creative Arts School in Ghana, five model science-based schools, one model technical school, and others that are being built—are still financed by the GETFund.
Additionally, he said that from 2019 to 2021, 2,718 cars were provided by the government through the GETFund to various organizations and institutions within the Ministry of Education.
He claims that between 2019 and 2020, the GETFund also provided 1,500 motorbikes to the many organizations and departments that fall under the Ministry of Education.
Speaking about the NPP’s accomplishments, he stated that through GETFund, an astounding 677,470 furniture pieces were given to primary and secondary schools between 2019 and 2021.
He noted that as part of the “One Teacher, One Laptop” initiative, the government has already given 350,000 computers to Ghanaian teachers through the GETFund, with the goal of enhancing instruction and student learning in classrooms.
Napo made it clear that a large number of Ghanaians needed to vote for Dr. Bawumia in order for the education sector to continue developing.
