In response to allegations that members of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) had brutalized some Garu villagers in the Upper East, the Ministry of National Security has taken action.
Following the incident on Sunday, more than fifty inhabitants of Tempane and Garu were hospitalized with varying degrees of injuries.
According to accounts, the military men assaulted the region on October 24 in retaliation for attacks on several National Security operatives.
However, the Ministry refuted the reports in a statement.
According to the Ministry, a vigilante group in Garu carried out a coordinated operation to confiscate the weapons used in the attack on October 24.
It is claimed that the angry teenage group attacked the cops by firing multiple rounds at a black Toyota Land Cruiser in which the officers were seated, despite their initial attempts to identify themselves as National Security personnel.
The cops drove to the Garu Police Station to seek refuge after the attacks on their car intensified.
“The irate youth, subsequently, pursued the officers, encircled the police station, and fired multiple shots at same with the intention of killing the officers,” portions of the statement read.
The statement further stated that the National Security officers were able to safely evacuate the Garu Police Station thanks to the prompt intervention of the Ghanaian Armed Forces.
“The Ministry of National Security deems the attack on the security personnel at a police station highly unacceptable, and strongly condemns acts aimed at intimidating and harming officials of State Security and Intelligence Agencies, and impeding them from effectively executing their mandate to safeguard the peace and stability of Ghana”.
“The Ministry owes it a duty to protect personnel of State Security and Intelligence Agencies who have sworn an oath to, at all times, defend the people and the territorial integrity of Ghana against all forms of threats”.
