Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate for 2024, claims that if elected, national service will not be mandatory.

The Vice President stated, “I think it’s time to rethink the concept of our current National Service Scheme in order to help our youth get jobs.”

He made it clear, saying, “My government will propose that those who can secure jobs after completing their education would be exempt from National Service.”

“National Service will no longer be mandatory and students will have the option to decide whether to do National Service. This will also encourage companies to go to campuses for recruitment annually.”

After completing their college or university, all Ghanaian citizens are required to participate in the National Service Scheme (NSS). The National Service Act of 1980 (Act 426) established the program, which places graduates to work in a variety of economic sectors of the nation in an effort to promote national development and unity.

After graduating from higher education or another postsecondary institution, qualifying individuals must register with the National Security Service (NSS) and complete a one-year National Service program. Participants are assigned to work in government offices, schools, hospitals, private sector companies, and other authorized establishments throughout Ghana during this time.

Participants in the NSS gain important work experience, are exposed to a variety of industries, and have the chance to support national development.

In order to support their local communities, participants are expected to actively participate in community service projects and carry out their duties with diligence.

The program also consists of seminars and workshops to improve participants’ knowledge and skills, as well as orientation programs that train participants on their roles and responsibilities.

Participants in the National Service program receive certificates upon successful completion; these certificates are frequently needed to obtain employment in Ghana’s public and private sectors. Participants may also be eligible for additional benefits, such as loan and scholarship eligibility and priority consideration for government employment.
