The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has threatened the Ghana Police Service with arrests for allegedly stealing and selling abandoned rail tracks in the area, along with some police officers.

The NDC claims that officers from the Counter Terrorism Unit are protecting NPP constituency officers and their allies who have been stealing these rail tracks to sell to Chinese investors. The NDC issued this ultimatum through its Eastern Regional Communications Bureau.

The NDC said during a press conference that they had audiovisual records and pictures that show where train tracks have been removed: Upper West Akim, Asene Manso Akroso, Achiase, Nsawam-Adoagyiri, New Juaben North and South, and Abuakwa North Municipalities.

The evidence indicates that the thefts took place under the watchful eye and close protection of police officers.

The NDC plans to seek the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to begin a probe into the matter, according to Kojo Dankwah, the party’s Eastern Regional Communications Officer.

“We had information that railway tracks were being stolen by people within the NPP, including District Chief Executive Officers, communication officers within constituencies, youth organizers, and other constituency officers who were stealing our railway lines and sharing the spoils among themselves. They were selling the tracks for profit” Mr Dankwa stated.

Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is said to have supported these criminal actions and used the money obtained to fund his campaign for the elections on November 4th, according to the NDC’s investigation.

Given these results, Mr. Dankwah emphasized that it is now imperative that we raise awareness of this problem. We have decided to guarantee that everyone involved faces legal repercussions by launching a petition with the OSP, police, and other pertinent institutions.

“We’ve given the police a 48-hour ultimatum to arrest those involved in these illegal activities,” he continued. In the event that this fails, we shall act independently and initiate citizen’s arrests.”
