NDC demands parliamentary probe into stolen biometric machines

To ensure that the elections in December are free and fair, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on Speaker of the Parliament Alban Bagbin to look into the Electoral Commission’s (EC) unaccounted Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) and components of Biometric Verification Registration Kits.

The party expressed its hope that you would thoroughly investigate the matter to put an end to it and guarantee a free, fair, and transparent election in December 2024 with the help of the minority caucus in parliament and the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, in a statement dated April 18.

The party said that the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the NDC decided to look into the matter further after the minority leader, Cassiel Ato Forson, expressed concerns about missing BVDs and BVR Kits in parliament, which attracted interest from the public and social media.

“FEC’s involvement in the fray and the subsequent admission by the EC Chairperson at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on the 9th of April 2024 that the biometric equipment was indeed stolen, culminated in a major press conference by the Party on the 15th of April 2024,” the NDC said.

The statement also stated that the FEC had a lengthy discussion about the potential implications of the missing equipment on the impending elections in December on April 16.

The statement read, “The FEC again deliberated extensively on the missing equipment at its meeting on April 16, 2024, especially on the effect this could have on the December general elections.”

According to the NDC, as a conclusion, the party’s FEC decided to politely ask the speaker for help in looking into the situation more thoroughly and to report the matter to his august office.

It further stated, “FEC is ready to provide a technical IT team to assist in the investigation.”
