Following his announcement that the government has finished paying all debtors under the domestic debt exchange, President Akufo-Addo is already the target of criticism.

President Akufo-Addo revealed that bondholders have received payments totaling an astounding GH¢5.8 billion during his State of the Nation Address, which he gave in Parliament on Tuesday, February 27.

“For the last leg of the domestic debt exchange on September 5, 2023, a week ago last Tuesday, on February 20, 2024, the second coupon of GH¢5.8 billion was paid to domestic bondholders. This is the largest coupon paid in a day in Ghana’s history.

“On the external debt side, we have achieved a significant milestone by reaching an agreement with our bilateral creditors and I will use this occasion to thank the Republic of China and France, co-chairs of the official creditors committee for their positive roles in this achievement.”

In contrast to what he said, some domestic bondholders assert that they have not yet received their entire payment, including their principal.

Furthermore, a few bondholders who contacted JoyNews claimed not to have received the coupons as promised.

Not all investors have received their coupons, according to Dr. Adu Anane Antwi, convener of the Pensioner Bondholder’s Forum.

“These days, the government pays the coupons as and when they are due, to pensioners and all other individuals who did not tender in their bonds.” Thus, the companies that failed to tender their bonus for the exchange are the only bondholders who are still complaining about not receiving the coupons.”
