The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) claims to have planned for a potential run-off election on Saturday.
According to the party, a run-off election will be held on September 2nd if delegates are unable to choose the top five candidates for the election on November 4th.
The NPP will abide by its constitution, according to Evans Nimako, director of elections and research.
“It has been agreed that in the event of the conference not being able to produce the first five, there will have to be a re-run and so September 2, 2023, has been slated for a possible run-off date.”
“The letter of our Constitution in Article 13 (1.9) indicates that there must be first five of the presidential candidates and so if it is the first three, then it means there will have to be another election for the two to be elected to add up to five.”
There are a total of 10 candidates running for the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s flagbearer position.
Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a former minister of food and agriculture, Mr. Boakye Agyarko, a former minister of energy, Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former NPP general secretary and presidential spokesperson, Mr. Francis Addai-Nimoh, and Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, a former minister of trade and industry.
The other members are Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President; Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Former Minister of Trade and Industry; Mr. Joe Ghartey, Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General; Mr. Kwadwo Opoku, Energy Expert; and Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central.
On August 26, 2023, a Special Delegates Congress will be held to choose five of the presidential candidates.
On November 4, 2023, the top five candidates will then compete for the position of flagbearer, electing one to represent their party in the general election of 2024.
