The Commission of the Police (COP), who was overheard purportedly plotting to oust Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Alex Mensah, has acknowledged calling Dr. George Akuffo Dampare “not correct.”

COP Mensah stated that he does not regret making the statement and will repeat it again if necessary while testifying at the public hearing on the leaked recording in parliament on Thursday, August 31, 2023.

He claimed that many Ghana Police Service officers are dissatisfied as a result of the IGP’s move.

“Honourable chair, I would not deny that fact today, tomorrow or the next day. It is something, I would not run away from. I would say it everywhere, anywhere that I go.

“And you can do your own investigations, call police officers, underground and find out from them,” he said after he was asked by the vice chair of the parliamentary committee investigating the leaked tape, James Agalga, whether he said “this IGP is not correct”.

He continued by saying that the present IGP’s actions and inactions, which he claimed could have a negative impact on the results of the 2024 elections, prompted him to make the comment.

“My worry was and is that the majority of police officers are not content right now. And it is these same individuals who will oversee election security. Also keep in mind that police officers, their wives, children, parents, and moms all vote. That worries me,” he remarked.

Public fury has been sparked by an audio recording that purports to show a politician and a police commissioner discussing a scheme to oust Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare.

In the aforementioned tape, a police commissioner who identified himself as Mensa was overheard scheming with Bugri Naabu to have Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the IGP, removed because they feared he would be too rigid in the 2024 elections.

The politician is overheard being told by the Police Commissioner, who is rumored to be retiring, that the IGP is too strict and won’t permit manipulations in the elections next year if he isn’t fired.

He adds that the IGP’s security measures during the Assin North by-election demonstrate his unwillingness to permit election rigging.

“This IGP won’t help us. He won’t, he wants everything to be done fairly and we don’t win elections that way. If we don’t remove him, we can’t break the 8, in politics we need machinations and this IGP won’t allow that,” We overhear the Police Commissioner speaking.

In response to requests from the NDC Members of Parliament, the Ghanaian Parliament established a 7-member committee to investigate the recording that was released.

However, government supporters have claimed that the accusations made in the aforementioned audio should not be taken seriously because President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has no plans to replace IGP Dr. Geroge Akuffo Dampare.
