The picketing of pensioners at the offices of the finance ministry, according to finance minister Ken ofori-Atta, has caused him significant grief.

To demand complete exclusion of their investments from the debt exchange, members of the elderly bondholders’ group have been picketing outside the Ministry of Finance.

He stated that the nation’s older people and pensioners’ welfare and dignity remain a top priority for the administration.

Speaking to the legislature on February 16th, the minister remarked, “In seeking to understand the concerns of our senior citizens, I have met with them on three occasions; the most recent was 15 February 2023 where I explained the terms of the new bonds.”

“Mr Speaker, I subsequently wrote to their convener that all pensioners who did not participate in the bond offering are exempted,” Ofori-Atta added.

Sophia Akuffo, a former chief judge of Ghana, protested alongside pensioners on Friday (10 February) outside the Finance Ministry, requesting that the government exclude them from the Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP).
