The parliamentary session this afternoon was abruptly ended by the sudden passing of Dr. John Kumah, the Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Ejisu. After a brief illness, the lawmaker apparently died away early this morning.

The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin requested a ten-minute pause after learning the upsetting news. Still, the gloomy mood persisted as the intermission dragged on for over half an hour. It was clear that many MPs were too shaken by the news to participate in the planned debate when the Speaker and other lawmakers got back together.

Parliament was supposed to start debating President Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Address before the devastating announcement. The Speaker made the decision to confine the discussion to one question on the hotly contested issue after seeing the MPs’ emotional states.

Still, when one lawmaker tried to add anything to the discussion, it was clear that the House was not in the appropriate mood. As a result, the Speaker called for a Friday, March 8, 10 am adjournment of the meeting.
