A huge tree that fell on a motorbike and a car during a rainfall that preceded Monday morning’s intense deluge is said to have wounded one person and sent other to the hospital.
A military guy who was also trapped in the turmoil at Cantonments, Accra, managed to escape unharmed, but the sad occurrence happened when the motorbike rider, trying to avoid the falling tree, crossed paths with the descending trunk.
Reportedly, the driver of the vehicle a military officer by coincidence remarkably escaped unscathed and undamaged.
The motorbike rider, on the other hand, was not so fortunate. A tree fell on his lower body, necessitating an immediate admission to the Osu police hospital for medical assistance.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has reported that during Monday’s heavy rains in Accra, at least nine vehicles sustained damage from trees.
An hour-long downpour caused severe traffic in the capital, stranding drivers, employees, merchants, and students.
According to GNFS public relations officer Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One (ADO1) Alex Nartey, no injuries have been reported as of yet.
“So far, no, not that we’ve received so we are doing our best and we are hoping that truly no one is really trapped under any of the cars.”
Crews are currently working to remove fallen trees from vehicles at the airport. Nartey highlighted the proactive approach taken by the GNFS.
“We are doing our best to try and help with the situation,” said Nartey.
“There was another incident at 37 around the Italian embassy where our men heroically helped with clearing the road and saving lives and some of the vehicles there so when we got the wind of this incident, no one even called us but our men had to move here based on our intelligence we picked up.”
Following the occurrence, Dr. Kingsford Adams, the Director of Parks and Gardens, verified the accident’s specifics in a statement to the media.
He also observed that vehicles seemed reluctant to use the route, which resulted in a major disturbance in traffic flow created by the fallen tree.
