The eight senior high school pupils of Chiana who were expelled by the Ghana Education Service (GES) for insulting the President have had their case taken up by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The President was made aware of it at that point.
As a result, the GES has been instructed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, to explore an alternate disciplinary penalty instead of dismissal.
The most recent update was revealed in a news release from the Education Minister’s spokeswoman, Kwasi Kwarteng, dated Friday, January 13, 2023.

The female students were expelled by the GES for making derogatory remarks against President Akufo-Addo in a video they posted on social media.
They were suspended last year before being expelled from the Chiana Senior High School in the Kassena Nankana West District of the Upper East Region, according to the Ghana Education Service, in order to serve as a warning to other pupils.
The eight Chiana Senior High School pupils in the Upper East Region who were expelled by the Ghana Education Service (GES) for defaming President Akufo-Addo have begged both the President and the educational body to let them return to class.
The President and the GES have also received an apology from the students.
“I am here with my colleagues on our knees to beg the President, the Headmaster, the education office and our fellow Ghanaians. We are sorry for our videos that went viral. We did not mean for it to go viral, it was a childish play, we are sorry and on our knees that the President should call us back,” one of the students said in a video.
In a video that went viral last year, second- and fourth-year students were heard using derogatory language to refer to President Akufo-Addo.
On January 11, following a judgment on the video that had been captured the previous year, the Ghana Educational Service (GES) issued a statement ordering the dismissal of the pupils.
“Very unpleasant, and contrary to the acceptable norms of the behaviour normally demanded of any student in Ghana’s educational system,” it was said of the pupils’ activities.
Eight students from the Chiana Senior High School in the Upper East Region have been expelled by the Ghana Education Service (GES) for allegedly disrespecting President Akufo-Addo.
The pupils had been suspended before being expelled.
The GES claims that their investigation into the event established that the students insulted the President with foul language.
Thus, it has described the students’ behavior as “very undesirable, and contrary to the acceptable standards of the conduct generally required of any student in Ghana’s educational system.”
The GES had earlier apologised to President Akufo-Addo over the comments by students.
“We wish to inform the general public that the students in the video have been identified as second-year students of Chiana Senior High School in the Kassena Nankana West District.
“Management of GES wishes to extend our sincerest apology to the President and the general public on behalf of the students and school”, says portions of the statement issued on November 14, 2022.
