President Akufo-Addo makes new appointments to the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces

With effect from Thursday, February 1, 2024, President of the Republic Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has named Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, Chief of Army Staff, as Chief of Defence Staff. In accordance with Article 212 of the Republic’s Constitution, this appointment is contingent upon consultation with the Council of State.

It comes after Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, the current Chief of Defense Staff, is set to retire from the Ghana Armed Forces on Thursday, February 1, 2024, having completed his tour of duty. He has received the sincere gratitude of President Akufo-Addo for his loyal and deserving service to the country and the Ghanaian armed forces.

Additionally, the President has designated Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona to succeed Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah as Chief of Army Staff, effective Thursday, February 1, 2024.

In accordance with Article 212 of the Republic’s Constitution, this appointment has also been made contingent on consultation with the Council of State. Prior to receiving his new position, Major General Onwona served as the Commandant of the Staff College and Ghana Armed Forces Command.

Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Issah Adams Yakubu and Chief of Air Staff Air Vice Marshal Frederick Asare Kwasi Bekoe are still in their respective roles.
