A seven-member special committee has been formed by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to look into claims made on a tape that the government intended to remove the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, in order to rig the upcoming 2024 General Elections.

The committee will be established in response to the minority caucus of Parliament, which demanded a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the veracity and legitimacy of the recording that was released.
Three lawmakers from each side of the house will make up the committee, and they will have the help of a technical specialist for their job.

As instructed by the Speaker, the names of the three members from the Majority and Minority caucuses will be made public within a week.

When making the appeal in Parliament, Armah Kofi Buah, the deputy minority leader, remarked “Mr. Speaker that I submit this statement for your kind attention seeking to invoke the appropriate Standing Orders of the House and other relevant legislation, for a bi-partisan investigation either by a special committee of the House, or the Committee on Defence and Interior, into this all-important matter.”

The terms of reference of this investigation will be to establish the following:

1. The authenticity of the leaked audio recording

2. Investigate the conspiracy to remove the current Inspector-General of Police

3. Investigate any other matter contained in the audio recording

4. Recommend sanctions to persons found culpable where appropriate

5. Make recommendations for reforms where necessary

6. Make such other recommendations and consequential orders as the committee may deem appropriate.
