The current national police commander, IGP George Akuffo Dampare, has been described as the “worst ever” since he joined the service in the last 31 years, according to the former director general (technical) of the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah.

“Honorable member and honourable chair, if you give me the chance today, I’ll repeat what I stated yesterday. In my opinion, in my 31 years of service, he is the worst IGP this nation has ever had, said COP Mensah in his second appearance before a parliamentary committee looking into a tape that was allegedly leaked about a plot to remove Dampare from office.

He claims that he has discussed his observation with IGP Dampare “on several occasions.”

The majority of the police force’s employees are dissatisfied with Dampare’s management style, according to COP Mensah, who claimed this on Thursday during his first appearance before the Atta Akyea-led committee that morale is now poor.

IGP Dampare is a bad manager, he claimed, but there are no plans to remove him from office.

The committee is looking into a tape that was leaked that shows three police officers and Daniel Bugri Naabu, the former northern regional chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), discussing the potential removal of the IGP.

“Dampare is not managing the police service well and the majority of police officers are not happy,” COP Mensah told the committee members. “You can call the police officers underground and they will tell you.”

“The tape that I heard today, there are so many things in that tape that I don’t remember and there are so many things that we discussed that are not on the tape. I’ve met Bugri Naabu four times and we have discussed many things some of them private things that I am not ready to discuss in public

“I had a meeting with Bugri Naabu but I don’t remember having any plan to remove the IGP because I don’t remove IGPs,” COP Mensah said.

The former Northern regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, admitted that he recorded the video that was leaked when it was played for the committee on Monday.

Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of the House of Commons, established a committee to conduct a thorough forensic investigation to identify people who were hiding behind the scenes.
