The Black Stars’ head coach, Chris Hughton, has stated that his team is driven to defeat Mozambique and earn the necessary points.
If the Black Stars are to advance to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) knockout stages this year, they must defeat the Mambas of Mozambique in their Group B match.
During a press conference held prior to the match, Chris Hughton emphasized the importance of the match against Mozambique for their qualification process and said the players needed to perform at their best to win.
“We have to think about our last game and the improvement of our game. We appreciate the past, but we are more focused on what is in front of us.”
“We are aware of the magnitude of this game, and we know that this is a game we have to win. Our preparations have been the same as our two games and we are prepared for a very tough match. We have to make sure we put in a level of performance that will allow us to win the game.
“There are no easy games at this AFCON, and we are coming up against a Mozambique side who also needs a win, so we have to be physically and mentally prepared for the match,” he stated.
Huhgton added that the players are highly motivated by their performance against Egypt and understand the importance of winning all three points.
Chris Hughton responded, “We are aware of what happened in the past, and some players were involved in that,” when asked if the players’ previous AFCON group stage exit was playing into their minds. However, because it could impact your game, these players are accustomed to looking forward and bouncing back from previous dueling encounters.
As their last Group B game against Mozambique approaches, Kudus emphasized how important a victory is to guaranteeing a spot in the tournament’s next round.
Kudus highlighted the team’s tenacity and energy in his reflections on the previous game against the North African team, but he also stated that they must improve in the next game in order to earn the crucial three points.
“It is very possible until we finish the last game in the group; it’s the same focus. You could see the fighting spirit and the energy from the guys today,” the West Ham United attacker said.
“We have to do more than that in the last game because we have to get the three points at all costs, and we will see what happens after,” he added.
The Black Stars would be looking to snap their six-game losing streak when they take on Mozambique, who have let up at least two goals in each of their 14 AFCON games.
On Monday, January 22, 2024, the much awaited match between Ghana and Mozambique will take place at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe in Abidjan.
