The nationwide strike by three pre-tertiary teacher unions, which began on March 20, 2024, has been called off due to unresolved disputes with their benefits and working conditions.

The National Labour Commission (NLC) was able to secure an interim order to stop the industrial action, which gave the unions and the government a chance to communicate and negotiate. As a result, the strike has been suspended.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) are among the unions taking part in the walkout. A sizable percentage of pre-tertiary teachers nationwide are represented by these unions.

The president of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana, King Ali Awudu, spoke to the media in Accra on Tuesday and stated that the unions are prepared to follow the law and cooperate with their employers. He underlined the unions’ dedication to protecting the law and promoting the interests of their members.
“In light of the interim injunction obtained by the National Labour Commission and in adherence to legal procedures, we hereby declare the strike, which commenced on March 20, 2024, to be over,” stated King Ali Awudu. “We call upon all our members and pre-tertiary educators nationwide to return to work immediately.”

The unions have said clearly, nevertheless, that the decision to call off the strike does not mean that their complaints have been addressed. Rather, they perceive it as a calculated action to assist in negotiations and have productive conversations with pertinent parties.

“We implore our employers, headed by the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations, to start talks right away. We anticipate that this afternoon, April 2, 2024, will see the start of discussions. To ensure a satisfying outcome and avoid such interruptions in the future, it is essential that we move these discussions along quickly,” King Ali Awudu stated.
