Asamoah Gyan of Ghana has declared his retirement from professional football. On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, the 37-year-old made the announcement via a press release. Gyan declared, “That voice has been audible in my ears, and I have bowed to it. It is time. As I formally leave professional football, it’s time to hang the jersey and boots in honor.
Gyan, however, made it clear that he would continue to take part in football-related activities in some capacity.
He said, “I am mindful of the opinions shared by esteemed businessmen and sports gurus: ‘You don’t abandon your passion.'” notwithstanding his retirement. As they did recently with the Babyjet U16 African competition, in which 1,200 young players from all around West Africa displayed their skills on live TV, Gyan promised that he and his management would continue to support and foster future talent.
Additionally, he made a suggestion that he would use “my experience and knowledge in the realms of coaching, football business, and scouting.”
Gyan played all of his football in France with Rennes, where he was a star, scoring fourteen goals in forty-eight league games over the course of two seasons.
The 37-year-old broke the club’s transfer record when he signed with Premier League team Sunderland in 2010, and during his two seasons at the Stadium of Light, he scored 10 goals in 34 Premier League games.
Before joining Legon Cities, he had played for Al Ain, Shanghai SIPG, Kayserispor, and North East United.
On the international level, Gyan played 109 times for the Black Stars and scored 51 goals.
Gyan retired as Africa’s leading scorer on the international level after participating in three World Cups.
