The Socialist International’s Secretary General, Ms. Benedicta Lasi, visited Speaker Rt. Hon. Alban S. K. Bagbin as a courtesy in an effort to highlight the urgent need to promote more Ghanaian women into positions of leadership on a global scale.

Ms. Lasi thanked Speaker Bagbin during the meeting, which took place on Wednesday at the Speaker’s office in Accra, for his tremendous mentoring and support throughout her early years in politics, which had helped her go this far.

She praised the Speaker for the leadership he has shown in advancing the values of women’s inclusion in the nation’s government structure and advised women not to be intimidated by male opponents’ insults and threats.

The Speaker praised Ms. Lasi for coming and congratulated her on setting the extraordinary milestone of becoming the organization’s 132-member organization’s first woman, first African, and youngest leader at age 35.

“If I had a magic wand, I would have pushed every woman into political leadership and eliminate all forms of discrimination meted out to women in their quest to enter politics” he said.

Rt Hon Alban S. K. Bagbin further underlined the need to recognize and encourage the success of women who are able to overcome obstacles and make Ghana and the continent as a whole proud.

He offered the Secretary General of his and the parliament’s assistance in making sure she leaves a lasting impression in her new position.
